Reid Walker assembled as important collection of works largely by British artists, including examples by Gainsborough and Turner. The Herring family were particularly admired and these watercolours, together with an exceptional group of ten works by Herring Senior to be included in the 22 November sale of British Pictures 1500-1850, were probably acquired in the 1890s.

We are grateful to David Fuller for suggesting that despite the signature this watercolour could in fact be by J.F. Herring Junior, whose early work was stylistically very close to that of his father.

Lot Essay

Herring Senior and Junior are often difficult to distinguish as both produce the same subject matter of farmyard animals and rural scenes. In watercolour a muted palette characterises their work. Herring Senior, on the whole, uses heavier outlines in his drawings. Herring Junior is well known for his series of watercolours the Life of a Race Horse.
