Lot Essay

Holland painted a series of views of the Greenwich Observatory. It was one of his favourite subjects and he returned to paint it on a number of occasions. Other versions are in Tate, London and the Huntington Library, California.

The present watercolour shows the King William block on the right and the Queen Mary block opposite, both designed by Sir Christopher Wren as part of his overall scheme for Greenwich executed between 1696 and 1715.
