Lot Essay

In July of 1808 Chinnery moved from Calcutta to Dacca (modern Dhaka) perhaps for health reasons, perhaps to see his friend Charles D'Oyly or perhaps because he knew that the Daniells had not travelled there and, as far as he was aware, nor had any other European artist at that time. Dacca as an historically wealthy city boasted fine buildings dating from the 17th Century that inspired Chinnery to draw. Chinnery remained in Dacca for three years before returning to Calcutta.
