Lot Essay

After arriving at Orta on 1 June 1867, the following day after a hot morning of walking and drawing Lear lunched at Pettinasco, then napped until 2.30. In the afternoon he drew 'bits of the beautiful foreground-rye & vine & rock & fern' before hurrying back to his hotel in advance of a thunderstorm. For other views of Lake Orta executed on the same day see S. Wilcox, Edward Lear and the Art of Travel, New Haven, 2000, p. 107, nos. 124 and 125.

For a note on Lear's trip to the Italian Lakes, see lot 167.
