Lot Essay

After arriving at Orta on 1 June 1867, the following day after a hot morning of walking and drawing Lear lunched at Pettinasco, then napped until 2.30. In the afternoon he drew 'bits of the beautiful foreground-rye & vine & rock & fern' before hurrying back to his hotel in advance of a thunderstorm.
