Lady Elizabeth Keith Lindsay was the eldest daughter of Alexander, 23rd Earl of Crawford and 6th of Balcarres, of Haigh Hall, Wigan and Dunecht. She was married to Richard Edensor Heathcote, M.P. for Stoke-on-Trent, of Apedale and Longton Halls, Staffordshire. Lady Eizabeth was an intimate friend of the Queen. Her only daughter, Elizabeth Anne was five months younger than Princess Victoria and the two were playfellows.

This series of drawings was executed during the Princess's stay with her mother at the seaside village of Ramsgate with the Duchess of Kent in 1822. Lady Elizabeth had studied under Gainsborough and was a talented amateur artist, much like her kinswoman, Louisa, Marchioness of Waterford (1818-1891). One of the most interesting drawings shows Victoria holding a ball. According to the inscription which reads '... Elizabeth/for I am going away tomorrow' Princess Victoria is presenting her playfellow with the ball as a parting gift.
