Lot Essay

Raymond Rôze (1875-1920) was a composer, conductor, and impresario. He is best known for his operatic work Joan of Arc, which he produced at Covent Garden. He was musical director under Sir Herbert Tree, and composed the incidental music for several of his productions. In 1914 he founded the United Arts Rifles, perhaps this is why Beerbohm drew him in this year.
