Brangwyn produced a well known etching of Browning's house, dated to 1912 to which the present watercolour is clearly linked. As with many of Brangwyn's plates it was large in scale 'deeply bitten' producing a dramatic effect of chiaroscuro. 'In an age dedicated to Whistlerian, small scale, finely etched works, Brangwyn's large, dark, dramatic plates caused some critics to accuse him of 'violating the medium'.' (L. Horner, Frank Brangwyn: A Mission to Decorate Life, The Fine Art Society, 2006, exhibition catalogue, p. 115.). The atmosphere and drama of the present watercolour is translated very effectively into the bold scheme of the etching through Brangwyn's pioneering and flamboyant approach.
