Lot Essay

Professor Theodore Reff has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

In its powerful contour and mastery of ballet positions, the present drawing is typical of many of Degas' dancer drawings from the 1880s. It is a counterproof of a drawing which appeared in the second sale of the artist's estate, held several months earlier in December 1918.
