4° (296 x 228mm). Two pen, ink and watercolour drawings on paper (c.225 x c.185mm) mounted on binder's blanks, engraved folding map by S.J. Neele. (Light spotting on drawings, map, and endpapers, map with edge wear, a few short tears, and light offsetting.) Contemporary tree calf, sides with Greek-key border in gilt, flat spine gilt in compartments (rubbed, spine head chipped). Provenance: John, first Baron Crewe (bookplate) -- Mark Dineley (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED 'FROM THE AUTHOR' AND EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH TWO ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS, these unsigned but possibly by the author. George Ellis, author of the popular Specimens of Early English Poets, and History of the Dutch Revolution, wrote this Memoir after two years with a legation attached to the British ambassador in St. Petersburg. The excellent map is supplemented by descriptions of the various nations, and specimens of their language: the Abkhas, Osseti, Kisti, Georgians, etc. Not in Blackmer; Atabey 394.
