THE LISBON EARTHQUAKE -- CAULA, BERNARDO DE.
Lisboa. Lisbon: 1763.

Manuscript panorama of Lisbon, pencil, sepia and ink and wash on two sheets of paper, joined, 225 x 1390mm, the city viewed from the South bank of the Tejo (Tagus) in a panoramic sweep extending from the Torre de Bogio in the open ocean and Carcavellas on the west of the Barra coastline to the Palacio do Patriarcha and the olive fields in the east, shipping on the Tejo consists of over 78 boats from galleons to small craft while birds fill the sky above, below the panorama itself is the key to 105 numbered locations, one side panel contains the title and arms of Lisbon, the other a signed dedication to Senhor Don Carlos Alberto Guilhermo de Colson, Conseilheiro da Corte. (A few clean tears at folds, some light spotting to margins and browning at paper join).

A HIGHLY IMPORTANT PANORAMA FEATURING THE DEVASTATED CITY OF LISBON eight years after the great earthquake which took place on 1 November 1755. All Europe was shocked by the death toll of between 60,000 and 100,000 people. The tsunami and disasterous fire which followed the quake sank many ships in addition to destroying some 18,000 buildings. Although Portugal's 18th-century colonial ambitions were profoundly disrupted, this panorama by Bernardo de Caula, 'pr[ime]ro tenente d'artillaria: do Algarve', seems to have had the patriotic aim of showing that trade was again prospering and that many buildings remained intact. In the dedication he expresses the hope that continued rebuilding will restore the city to its former glory.
