Princess Alice, the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert married Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight on 1st July 1862. The watch was presented to Ludwig's Chamberlain, Freiherr Paul Westerweller von Anthoni who accompanied him to England for the wedding. The death of Prince Albert in December 1861 had caused the wedding to be postponed, and when it did take place in the dining room at Osborne it was a suitably sombre and private occasion.
Born in Darmstadt on 29 June 1827, Paul von Westerweller started his military career in 1848 in the 2nd Infantry Regiment of Hesse, later advancing to 2nd Lieutenant in the Artillery Corps. Eventually he was promoted to the General Staff of the 8th Bundesarmee Corps, and in 1856 he was asked to serve on the staff of Prince Ludwig of Hesse, accompanying him to England in 1862. In 1868, whilst still undertaking duties for the Prince he was advanced to Major. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class. He became Oberstlieutenant in 1878 quickly rising to Major General in 1882 and Lieutenant General in 1887. He was to finish his military career as a senior General in command of the Infantry, and continued as Court Chamberlain to the Grand Duke until 1906. Sadly, the majority of the Westerweller family perished during the Second World War during an air raid on their house in Darmstadt.
