Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1997
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Tasting Note: The Grand Vin was bottled in May 2000. First tasted, fairly superficially, from the cask before dining at the château in September 1998. It was not as good as the '96 but still had quite nice flesh. At Rodenstock's blind tasting in March 2001, it had a good colour, intense, youthful; a 'classic tea and mocha' nose, which opened up quickly, lovely, fragrant. In short, showing well. Medium-dry entry leading to a dry, very tannic finish. Good but as yet a bit raw. It was my second highest mark which also turned out to be identical to the group's average. Very straight forward, a good mid-term future. At the MW tasting: sweet, singed, herbaceous. Most recently: 'drinking surprisingly well at a lunch with the family (a magnum) on Christmas Day. Last noted December 2001. *** M.B.
