The vendor, Denise Craddock, shared a flat with various members of Queen/Smile/Ibex between October 1969 and June 1970. In an accompanying note regarding the background to this page of lyrics, Denise states that on the ...11.11.69 Noted in my diary Brian and Roger practising a new song in the sitting room of the garden flat we were sharing at 40, Ferry Road, SW13... and these lyrics appear to have derived from this rehearsal session. It would seem that Brian May [or Tim Staffell on an earlier occasion at the flat] must have dictated the first two verses to Roger Taylor as the latter is not acknowledged as a contributor to the genesis of this song.
The group Smile was formed in October 1968 and comprised Brian May - lead guitar and backing vocals, Tim Staffell - vocals and bass guitar, Roger Taylor - drums and backing vocals. They recorded Doin' All Right at Trident Studios, London in June 1969. The lyrics for the song are credited to Brian May and Tim Staffell. Queen's version of the song with Freddie on vocals, was released on their debut album in 1973, with the same writers' credit. Tim Staffell also recorded his version of the song recently on the first album with his new group aMIGO.
In March, 1970 Staffell left Smile and the group broke up. Freddie then joined Brian May and Roger Taylor, and the three of them formed Queen. They started looking for a bass player and had three or four before they found John Deacon, who joined Queen in February 1971.
The doodles on the reverse of the paper on which the lyrics are written reflect the various flatmates at Ferry Road at that point in 1969. Names and fragments of names include: Fred [Bulsara], Roger [Taylor], John [Deacon] and Denise [Craddock].
