MAYAN CARVED VESSEL
LATE CLASSIC, ca. A.D. 550 - 950
boldly carved on each side with a rectangular panel filled with the visage of one of the versions of the Sun God, Kinich'Ahau, with upward turned snout, prototypical spiral-incised, staring eye with three circles along the lower eyelid, the gaping jaw covered with the mat symbol, wearing jade ear flares, a band of glyphs above, possibly including the glyph for cacao, painted in a black slip and incised areas heightened with red pigment.
