THE MOTHER OF GOD WITH PROPHETS
GREEK (PROBABLY MOUNT ATHOS), DATED 1641
The Mother of God seated on a carved, wooden throne, supporting Christ, the latter blessing and holding a closed scroll, the upper corners occupied by two archangels, the sides depicting prophets, their scrolls inscribed with Old Testament verses, the two melodists, Sts. Cosmas and John Damaskenos, depicted in the centre of the bottom register, painted with saturated colours, predominantly reds and blues, against a gold and light green background, with a raised borded, its inner side with a twisted border and its edges painted red
32½ x 19 7/8 in. (82.5 x 50.5 cm)
The dedicatory inscription reads: Good hope of the World, protect your servant Antonis, the painter, your humble servant, in the year 1641
