THE DEPOSITION
GREEK (NORTH-WEST), 17TH CENTURY
Christ removed from the cross by Nikodemos, the Virgin supporting the upper part of the corpse and kissing his face, Mary Magdadene kissing his right hand, accompanied by two women in mourning, the figures opposite balancing the composition, John holding Christ's left hand, Joseph removing the nail from his feet, a female figure further back attending the event, the city of Jerusalem with a mountain-range portrayed in the background, the red and green of the Virgin's and Nikodemos's garments, as well as the deep brown that stands for the walls of Jerusalem contrasting sharply with both the bright yellow clothes of Magdalene and Joseph and also with the pastel rendition of the city and mountains behind, the sky rendered in gold
16 x 12¼ in. (40.75 x 31.25 cm)
The painted arch at the top of the composition testifies that the icon was meant to be placed behind a simulated frame on the epistyle that displays the major liturgical feasts.
