GREEK (IONIAN ISLANDS), CIRCA 1800
The first icon showing the Baptist, dressed in the raiment of skins, kneeling in the foreground, with his hands tied, the Roman soldier behind, wearing complete military attire, holding the sword in his raised hand, Salome standing opposite, carrying the basin, in the upper part of the composition Herod and his company seated around a table, attending as Salome carries John's head; the second icon showing the Doubting Thomas extending his hand to Christ's wound, the latter standing in front of the door of a large building, the Apostles in two groups appearing at the sides; both scenes depicted against buildings with emphasised masonry, painted in an Italianate style, with saturated colours and gold, against light green skies
