The front designed as an abstract black lacquer pattern to the circular-cut diamond-collet detail, opening to reveal a mirror and compartments for powder, cigarettes, pill box, lighter, lipstick (lipstick holder deficient), comb, with a hidden clock compartment, made in 1937, 14.7 x 12.0 x 2.2 cm, with French assay mark for gold, the lighter with French assay mark for gold and silver, in fitted black silk case with handle
Signed La Minaudière de Van Cleef & Arpels and with maker's mark for Van Cleef & Arpels, no. 47341 (2)

Lot Essay

The geometric, pyramidal pattern is similar to those used in contemporary architecture, borrowing from Egyptian design.
This Minaudière is an early example of Van Cleef & Arpels' invention: made in 1937 it is only three years older than the first Minaudière produced.
