The representation of religious subjects developed by the Pont-Aven group was in fact a renewal with the tradition of icons and Italian Primitives. Gad Frederik Clément, an artist of French origin and raised in Denmark, arrived in Pont-Aven in 1893 and was one of the artists most implicated in this iconography. While he painted very few works in the Pont-Aven style, in the present work the "language" of Pont-Aven is clearly visible all the while revealing a certain sensitivity to XVth century Italian painters.
