A RARE AND FINE SILVER GILT AND ENAMAL SPICE BOX by Herman Ratzerdorfer (worked between 1843-1866)

Set on a circular domed base, a slightly tapering cylindrical stem applied with open scrollwork, the cylindrical body cast and chased with four architectural niches applied with Roman soldiers within, the tapering neck applied with further openworked scrolls below a conforming domed hinged cover applied with a small figure of a Jew dressed according to the 18th century German custom including the typical Jewish Barrette (flat round hat), holding a book in his right hand and a wine beaker in his left, the whole elaborately decorated with painted enamel scrolls, foliage and flowers, set with garnets and turquoises, marked on base - 23 cm high (300gr)
