Lot Essay

From 1903 Toorop travelled regularly to Domburg, and was the driving force behind the artistic tradition there - he was followed to Domburg by artists such as Sluijters, Mondriaan and Leo Gestel, who came to Zeeland for inspiration. In 1904 Toorop had visited his friend Van Rijsselberghe in Paris, with whom he met artists such as Paul Signac. It was here that Toorop experimented with broad and vibrant strokes; fields of light colours arranged in a mosaic-like pattern. His introduction of this new international style influenced artists like Mondriaan (see lots....). For more information on Jan Toorop and his contacts in Zeeland see Ineke Spaander e.a., Reünie op 't Duin, Mondriaan en tijdgenoten in Zeeland, Zwolle 1994.

To be included in the catalogue raisonné on the artist's work being prepared by G.W.C. van Wezel
