Lot Essay

The Batenin Factory produced high quality porcealin in the Empire style, from the second decade of the 19th century until 1839 when it was destoryed by fire. The factory did not produce figures, but specialised in ornate gilded works with a variety of painted decorations including playing cards, views of St. Petersburg and portraits. The Factory was awarded a gold medal at the St. Petersburg Industrial Exhibition in 1829, however, specifically for the fine floral decoration, in strong colours, often extending into the gilt borders, and cobalt blue tea services.
