A FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL BY GILLE DESELIER, LIÈGE
Circa 1690 - 1700
With swamped barrel signed on the rib, decorated with acanthus ornament chiselled in low relief on both the breech and the tang, the maker's brass-lined stamp represented three times (Neue Støckel 8241) and with later silver 'spider' fore-sight (the engraving and signature each rubbed), signed lock with engraved strongly bevelled edges and decorated with chiselled acanthus sprays, carved moulded figured walnut full stock, full iron mounts finely chiselled and engraved after the Parisian fashion, comprising spurred pommel decorated with an arrangement of acanthus sprays and swags enclosing a demon mask cap, side-plate cut with a pierced design of strapwork and scrolls involving monster's heads and carrying a human mask, trigger-guard decorated with a further mask on the bow and with large acanthus finial, a pair of faceted baluster ramrod-pipes, and pierced escutcheon filled with a classical bust (ramrod missing).
