A FLEMISH FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL BY C. NIQUET À LIÈGE
Circa 1730-40
With swamped barrel of 'Spanish' form with brass 'spider' fore-sight, maker's stamps (Neue Støckel 823,824) and engraved tang, signed iron lock with bevelled edges and overlaid with engraved brass, the cock also faced in brass, carved moulded figured walnut full stock, full gilt-brass mounts finely cast in low relief, comprising spurred pommel engraved with swags and fitted with grotesque mask cap, pierced side-plate carrying a Minerva bust oval, trigger-guard decorated with a cherub and with grotesque-based finial, faceted ramrod-pipes, the rear one en suite, pierced escutcheon centering on a bust of Mars, and original brass-capped wooden ramrod.
