A FINE BAVARIAN OVER-AND-UNDER FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL BY CHRIST:IOS:FREY IN MÜNCHEN

With blued tapering barrels joined at the muzzles by an engraved gilt-brass band also carrying the fore-sight, the upper barrel signed 'C. Ioseph Frey' and the lower inscribed 'In Munchen', engraved upper tang, bevelled lock signed within a cartouche of scrolls, engraved with a figural trophy-of-arms on the tail and fitted with sliding pan (the upper part of the cock replaced), moulded figured walnut full stock carved with scrolls in low relief about the upper barrel tang, full gilt-brass mounts engraved with patterns of scrollwork en suite with the lock, including bevelled solid side-plate involving a further trophy-of-arms, trigger-guard decorated with a classical warrior bust, and retaining most of its original finish throughout (ramrod replaced).

Lot Essay

Christoph Joseph Frey (1685-1782) was appointed court gunmaker to the Dukes of Zweibrücken in 1746.
