A LARGE GERMAN CARTRIDGE-BOX (PATRON) OF SAXON TYPE
With wooden body of plano-convex section covered with black velvet, widening towards the base and drilled for seven cartridges, the interior fitted with an iron plate reinforcing the cartridge apertures, spring-actuated lid with button release, turned roped basal edge, etched throughout with characteristic designs of scrolling foliage involving a pair of grotesque masks, a frieze of animals and exotic birds around the base, a stork on the central panel, a phoenix on the lid, all on a contrasting blackened granular ground, and fitted with belt hook at the rear.
