A SAXON CARTRIDGE-BOX (PATRON) WITH ETCHED IRON MOUNTS
Circa 1585-90
With blackened wooden body of characteristic shape stamped on the front in imitation of natural staghorn (slightly rubbed, minor cracks on one side), drilled for four cartridges, the apertures faced with an iron plate etched with scrolls, the greater part of the body encased in iron decorated throughout with etched panels of fine scrollwork partly inhabited by exotic birds, invloving a winged putto mask at the front of the base, all on a granular ground, the underside of the base decorated en suite and fitted with sliding release for the lid, and with three loops for suspension.
