A FINE GERMAN CARVED STAGHORN POWDER-FLASK
Late 16th Century
With forked body of natural horn, the outer-face carved with the Judgement of Paris in high relief and partly in the round, centering on the nude figure of Venus and that of Paris seated in classical armour, involving a pair of grotesque profile masks within Cupid's framed segment and at the base a severed bearded head, blued iron mounts engraved and gilt throughout, including the owner's coat-of-arms crested and mantled on one basal cap, the motto 'Fides' inscribed on the other, the top and nozzle fitted with cut-off and sprung cap respectively, decorated with scrollwork and chain-pattern borders filled with silver dots, and fitted with two rings for suspension (one ring replaced, belt hook removed).
