We are grateful to Dr Bernard Aikema for tentatively proposing an attribution to Marten de Vos on the basis of photographs.
According to Karel van Mander, de Vos travelled to Italy, visiting Rome and Venice where it is said he studied with Jacopo Tintoretto. This painting, profoundly Tintorettesque, could be considered a result of this trip, and shows how his work can be highly eclectic.
