Lot Essay

The impressive carving and proportions of this console table and en suite mirror with its delicately carved flowers is reminiscent of the north Italian 18th century production, and particularly the Venetian one. The 19th century revival of such sculptural pieces was so popular that different regions in Italy were producing such pieces. A related Florentine suite (see detail next page), brought to Parma by the Bourbons and now at Palazzo Pitti, was exuberantly produced in the neo-rococo style and is illustrated in G. Cirillo, G. Godi, Il Mobile a Parma fra Barocco e Romanticismo 1600-1860, Parma, 1983, p. 235, ills. 665, 666.
