Details
ALBERT EINSTEIN (1879-1955)
Photograph signed (on lower margin, 'A. Einstein. [19]52'), a black and white group shot showing a humorous-looking Einstein in an interior between two elegantly dressed women, 207 x 255mm.

EINSTEIN SUPPORTS AN ISRAELI CAUSE IN THE YEAR IN WHICH HE DECLINED THE COUNTRY'S PRESIDENCY. The photograph was taken, presumably in Princeton, at a celebration of the construction of the Hadassah Medical Centre of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (the first medical centre to be constructed in the state of Israel). Einstein is flanked by the co-chairs of the Building Fund for the Centre, both at some stage National Presidents of Hadassah (the Women's Zionist Organisation of America): to his right is Rebecca Beldner Shulman (1896-1997); to his left the Talmudic scholar and writer Tamara de Sola Pool (1890-1981), a leading Zionist activist.

A slightly more tightly cropped version of this image was offered in our sale on 16 November 2005 (lot 138).
