Bollinger Extra Brut--Vintage 1966
Aÿ
Berry Bros and Rudd slip labels
"The first '66 I tasted, when it was launced on the British market--always well received--in 1971. Even then it had a straw tinge, 'meaty' nose and classic Bollinger stlye. It gained richness and stature throughout the 1970s, mouthfilling yet elegant. By the mid 1980s, its straw colour was slightly deeper but with a good, steady stream of what most people pay for, and a good life ahead. A decade later, superb: very fine mousse; buttery, honeyed bouquet; medium dryness and weight, lovely flavour, very good acidity (at Hugh Johnson's in 1997). Most recently: a very good, rich 'old straw' nose; excellent flavour and acidity. Last noted dining with Kate and Bill Baker, January 2001 **** MB, Vintage Wine
