From the "old-school" Montrose winemaking book. Time has tamed the tannins somewhat, mature sweet tobacco, moist earthiness, dried/leafy forest floor. This is not for a cocktail party, this Montrose is for the dinner table, a main course game paring to be certain. Tannins will seemingly outlive the fruit. Finishes dry, with gripping tannins. Good body and extract. Needs food to coax out the remaining fruit. Black peppery, lingering finish. A solid wine for the collector with an old-world palate. Selection from 2002's Christie's LA/Merrill Lynch tasting. ST
