Lot Essay

Anthony Ray, in Spanish Pottery 1248-1898 (London, 2000), pp. 134-139, discusses Catalan pottery made in Reus and Barcelona. Excavations have helped form an accurate picture of the pottery types produced at Reus. The same is not true of Barcelona, but documentary evidence suggests the two centres made similar wares. The present lot shares characteristics with pieces known to have been made at Reus; namely the bold scrolling foliage of the well, and in particular, the areas of hatching with single broad lines in one direction and slender double lines in the other direction (created with a double brush), techniques which seem to have been developed from those used at Valencia (see ibid, pp. 115-116, and footnote of lot 18).
