Lot Essay

Robert William Sievier (1794-1865) was an engraver, sculptor and later inventor. He studied under Edward Scriven and John Young before attending the Royal Academy from 1818. Initially studying as an engraver, in 1823 Sievier turned his attention to sculpture. His portrait busts include those of Prince Albert (Royal Collection, Windsor Castle) and Sir Thomas Lawrence (Soane Museum) although perhaps his most acclaimed is his memorial statue of Dr. Edward Jenner at Gloucester Cathedral.
