The table's herm-tapered fluted legs relate to those on a Writing Table supplied to Ninian Home (d. 1795) for Paxton House, Berwickshire, by Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779). The latter was also fitted with a hinged flap and enclosed a fitted interior with drawers and pigeon-holes however, it was further refined with inlaid ebonised stringing and recessed quatrefoil panels. It was invoiced by Chippendale on 5 May 1774 and described as 'a mahogany writeing [sic] Table with 2 Flaps the middle part coverd with Cloath and made to rise & drawers for paper pens, ink, sands &c on Castors £3.8s.-' (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. I, p. 273, vol. II, p. 239, fig. 438).
