Lot Essay

The original, signed, on panel, 62.5 x 47 cm., is in the Koninklijk Kabinet voor Schilderijen het Mauritshuis, The Hague. It belonged to G. van Slingelandt, The Hague before before entering the collection of Prince Willem V in 1768 (see A. Bredius revised by H. Gerson, Rembrandt The complete edition of the Paintings, 1969, p. 20, no. Br 24, with ill.).

The artist of the present lot is foremost recorded as a draughtsman and etcher working after the Old Masters. He was an active art collector and civil servant in The Hague of profession (see P.A. Scheen, Lexicon Nederlandse Beeldende Kunstenaars 1750-1950, 1969, II, p. 9)
