Born in Edinburgh, MacWhirter took up painting and moved to London as a young man where he was encouraged by John Ruskin. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite landscape and this was where his principle interest lay. His Ruskinian eye for detail and keen interest in the depiction of nature can be traced particularly to the 1850s from which time the present drawing can be dated.
