Margaret Gillies was the niece of an Edinburgh judge, in whose household she lived until she decided to try her success as an artist in London. She studied miniature painting there under Frederick Cruickshank and from 1832 to 1861 exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. Following a period of study in Paris, she was elected to the Old Watercolour Society in 1852.
A similar picture to the present watercolour, entitled London in June and painted by the artist in 1850, was exhibited by the Fine Art Society in 1945.
