Lot Essay

The present drawing is made after Thornycroft's sculpture of Teucer. The archer in Homer's Iliad, who missed hitting Hector eight times. Thornycroft's Teucer was first exhibited in plaster at the Royal Academy in 1881, with the monumental bronze appearing the following year. The bronze, an exercise in depicting the male nude at the moment of activity, was received with great acclaim and as a result a number of limited editions were cast by the artist.
