Born in C. Clare, Ireland, Mulready showed a precocious talent for drawing and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1800 at the age of fourteen. In 1807 he began to focus on genre scenes, influenced by the 17th-Century Dutch masters, supporting his family by teaching and painting theatre scenery. In 1816 he exhibited his first major painting at the Royal Academy. The Fight Interrupted shows a vicar stopping an altercation between two boys and in subject matter and style demonstrates the influence of both Wilkie and Webster on the artist's work. The success of this painting determined the course of Mulready's career.
