Lot Essay

The Parthenon is the principal temple of Athena at Athens on the Acropolis. It was erected by Ictinius and Callicrates from 447-433 B.C. The temple is Doric in style, but with an Ionic frieze. The interior was gutted by the Byzantines in 6th Century A.D. and it was further damaged by the Venetians in 1687. The remaining sculptures were removed by Lord Elgin in 1801-3.
