Lot Essay

Henry Brittan Willis was a Bristol-born artist who established himself as a successful landscape and animal painter, exhibiting widely in London and elsewhere. His grouping of cattle was much praised by the Art Journal in 1879; perhaps in recognition of Queen Victoria's acquisition of Highland Cattle in 1866. Harvesting Horses reveals Willis to be a true exponent of the English pastoral tradition.
