A Ni-Mai Do Suit of Armor
Edo period (18th century)
The suit designed on the upper section of the do in black lacquer and white lacing with the lower section and the tassets in gold lacquer and bright orange lacing and comprising a sixty-two plate russet-iron suji bachi mounted with an elaborate six-stage gold and shakudo tehen kanamono on the top, the lowest stage hexagonal, foliate and pierced with six inome, the five-lame neck guard terminating in wide turnbacks applied with stenciled leather and applied with gold family crests, the edges trimmed with shakudo fukurin, the maedate a large gold-lacquer lobster; the russet-iron facemask with a hinged nose plate and prominent chin and deep wrinkles on the cheeks and decorated with yasuri marks on the surface, lips lacquered red and with an applied boar's fur moustache, the mask fitted with a four-lame lacquered-leather throat guard; a nodawa with two lames; the two-plate do of false scales fitted with seven sections of five-lame tassets; o-sode with shakudo hardware; chain mail and gourd-plate sleeves; lacquered-leather thigh guards; splint shin guards; one storage box; no stand
