A Massive Shinshinto Katana in Mounts
Meiji period (late 19th century), attributed to Ashu ju Sukeyoshi and with spurious lacquer signature
The wide blade hon-zukuri, iori-mune with a long naginata-like tip, forged in ko-itame pattern with a gunome-choji midare tempered edge and midare-komi boshi; tang ubu with two holes and sujikai file marks; 76.2cm. long; 3.6cm. wide at start of tempered edge; 3.2cm. wide before tip; koshirae comprising red-lacquer saya with shibuichi mounts carved with scrolling vines and framed with gilt-metal; iron mokko tsuchime-ji tsuba with rope rim and carved with Hachiman characters; fuchi-kashira decorated to match saya hardware; menuki iron and gilt war clubs
With certificate no. 7376 issued by the Nihon Token Hozon Kai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Sword), dated 1984.5.26
