Lot Essay

Although Helleu's sitters included the cream of fashionable society, his favourite model was always his wife Alice. Eleven years her senior, Helleu first met Alice Guerin when he painted her portrait in 1894. The couple married two years later and she continued to sit for him throughout their married life, both as an elegant society beauty and a loving mother.
