Before her marriage to Prince Ghika of Romania, Liane de Pougy was the bitter rival of La Belle Otero, one of the most well known courtesans of the era. In her diary, the Duchess of Marlborough (another of Helleu's frequent sitters) recalls one night at a Monte Carlo casino. La Belle Otero dazzled the other guests by wearing every single piece of jewellery she owned. The next evening Liane de Pougy retaliated: she entered the room in a simple white gown, followed by her maid who was festooned with her mistress's jewels, which far outshone those of her rival (cf. Richard Green, Paul César Helleu: An Exhibition of Oils, Pastels and Drypoints, May 1991)
