The preliminary study, in the same sense, incised and signed with monogram, is in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (Schnackenburg, op.cit., no. 207 recto). Dusart used this drawing for his larger drawing of a school scene (Schnackenburg, op.cit., p. 320). Ostade's picture, signed and dated 1653, of the same subject in the same sense, entered the Collection of the Earl of Bute before 1800 (Dutch and Flemish Pictures from Scottish Collections, exhibition catalogue, Agnew's, London, November-December 1978, pp. 36-7, no. 20, illustrated). Ostade took up this subject again in his signed picture dated 1666 sold at Christie's, London, 6 July 1984, lot 105, illustrated. Schnackenburg dates this plate to after 1670, confirmed by Slatkes who dates it to circa 1671-9.
