A preliminary sketch, in the same sense and incised, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, while a further related preliminary study, also in the same sense, is in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (Schnackenburg, op.cit., nos. 201-2). As Slatkes (Pelletier a.o., op.cit., p.155) notes, a watercolour in the same sense is in the Musée de Compiègne (apparently unpublished), while he regards the picture in the National Gallery, London, as a copy. It is in reverse to the plate, and thus like the print, though bearing a signature and the date 1657. This is Ostade's only etched plate dated 1671.
