Lot Essay
The inscription along the bottom of the tile reads amal-e Musa ibn Estafani fi madinat Halab sanat 1699. 'The work of Musa, son of Stephen, in the town of Aleppo, 1699'.
The tile differs only in small details from one that was sold last year in Christie's, Paris 'Mobilier, Objets D'Art, Tableaux Anciens et Du XIXeme Siècle, Art Islamique, Céramiques Européennes et Verre' (11/12 April 2006, Lot 417). Oliver Watson comments on tiles of the same group, mentioning that they are the only pieces known which indicate a pottery production in Aleppo in the seventeenth century (Oliver Watson, in B.W. Robinson (ed.), Islamic Art in the Keir Collection, London, 1988, p.278, c151a and b).
